The Lelit Fred Prima is the entry point to Lelit's grinder range, a compact on-demand espresso grinder built to sit next to an Anna without dominating the counter. 38mm conical steel burrs, stepless micrometric grind adjustment, and manual button dosing straight into the portafilter. The starter grinder in the Lelit ecosystem, priced to make the jump from supermarket pre-ground actually achievable.
Simple, small, honest. Does what an entry grinder should do and nothing more.
Turn the collar and the burrs move in the smallest increments, no clicks, no fixed presets, no "nearly right" settings to put up with. Dial in the grind for espresso, nudge it as beans change, keep nudging until the shot is where you want it. It's the same principle used on grinders costing four times as much.
Conical burrs run slower and cooler than flat burrs and produce a grind profile that suits espresso. At 38mm they're small enough to keep the grinder compact, which is the Fred Prima's whole point, this is the grinder for kitchens where a Sette or a Vario+ won't fit.
Button on the front, grind while it's pressed, stop when you release. No timers, no programmes, no memory, just manual control, which keeps the mechanism simple and the failure points minimal. For beginners dialling in their first grinder, the direct feedback is useful.
The Fred Prima is sized and finished to sit next to a Lelit Anna without the pairing looking awkward. Same compact footprint ethos, same build philosophy. For buyers kitting out a first prosumer espresso setup in a small kitchen, the Anna and Fred Prima together fit where a bigger machine-and-grinder combination would not.
The Fred Prima is an entry-level grinder. It will pull proper espresso shots consistently enough for most home use, but it's not a Sette, a Virtuoso+, or a Lelit William. If you're running an Elizabeth or a Bianca and the grinder is going to be the limiting factor in the cup, the William or a Baratza Sette is the right match. For pairing with an Anna, or for anyone wanting a compact on-demand grinder at a sensible price, the Fred Prima is where Lelit's range begins.
If you want programmable timed dosing, set single and double dose times and hit the button to grind hands-free, the Fred Tempo (PL044MMT) is the next step up in the Fred range. Same chassis, same burrs, same micrometric adjustment, with the addition of dose timers. Worth the step up if you're grinding the same doses every day and want to stop watching the grinder.
